Lunch Is $2 At Taco Bell

After voting on Tuesday, I headed to Willow Street to visit Taco Bell. They have a new promotion going on. According to news stories, their advertising for it won't start until Sunday.

There are four new meal deals at $2 each. They include a small Pepsi, a small bag of Doritos, and your choice of a chicken burrito, a double-decker taco, a Gordita™ supreme or 5-layer burrito. A Gordita™ is a taco based on a pita bread instead of a corn shell.

A TWO-dollar Meal Deal?

In the 1990s, there were a number of fast-food outfits that offered meal deals for $3, but I can't remember seeing a $2 deal recently, unless perhaps Turkey Hill was offering a drink, hot dog and chips for that low price.

The catch, of course, is that it takes more than one burrito or other item to fill you up if you're at all hungry. They used to have (and perhaps still have) a meal deal that consisted of ten tacos and a drink. And their menu board makes it easy to add more victuals at, oh, 79c or so, depending on the item selected.

It Could Be Worse

On the other hand, with fresh lettuce, it's considerably more appealing than a hot dog that was full of grease and salt long before it spent an hour on a roller grill. You'd think convenience stores would figure out a self-serve hot dog that boils or steams the dogs instead, like a hot dog cart does.

I'm predicting that the new meal deals will become a part of their menu for a long time. Of course, when they first started having a few stores open 24 hours, I thought that would catch on. I used to grab a couple of breakfast burritos in the morning on the way to work; they were considerably cleaner to eat with one hand while driving than the breakfast sandwiches elsewhere, and they tasted "wetter" than those saltier, greasier breakfast sandwiches. That didn't last long, though.

The Subway Option

Some Subways are open for breakfast, and while they promote a breakfast special, they're quite happy to make anything on the menu. A sub sandwich on fresh bread, loaded up with tons of veggies, is a lot better way to start the day than the dismal offering most other places offer, especially in the grab-and-go restaurant category.

And for some reason, sleep in the morning is so much more delicious than it was the evening before. I predict that many of us will struggle with the snooze button for many years to come, making a relaxing breakfast hard to fit in before work.
